How a Speed Switch Can Prevent Costly Downtime in Mining Operations

Published by Bolec Electronics

In the mining industry, unplanned equipment downtime can cost thousands of dollars per hour. Whether it’s a conveyor system, dewatering pump, crusher or diesel power unit, early detection of speed-related faults is essential for protecting valuable equipment and maintaining production.

A speed switch is one of the simplest and most reliable ways to detect abnormal operating conditions before they become expensive failures.

What is a Speed Switch?

A speed switch monitors the rotational speed of a shaft, pulley, gear or engine. When the speed rises above or falls below a preset threshold, the unit activates an output relay that can trigger an alarm, stop equipment or activate another control device.

The BOLEC SS501 Dual Channel Speed Switch is a programmable electronic module that accepts signals from magnetic pickup sensors or Hall Effect sensors and can independently monitor two separate input channels. It can be configured to control alarms, buzzers, solenoids or PLC inputs for a wide variety of industrial applications.

1. Conveyor Belt Slip Detection

One of the most common failures in mining operations is conveyor belt slip.

Heavy loads, wet conditions or worn drive components can cause the drive pulley to rotate while the conveyor belt slows or slips. If left undetected, this can lead to:

  • Belt damage
  • Pulley wear
  • Motor overload
  • Expensive production downtime

By monitoring conveyor speed with the SS501, an alarm or shutdown can be activated before serious damage occurs.

2. Zero Speed Protection

A stopped conveyor, bucket elevator or pump can quickly become a major problem if upstream equipment continues operating.

Typical applications include:

  • Conveyor systems
  • Crushers
  • Bucket elevators
  • Screw conveyors
  • Rotary feeders

When shaft speed drops below the programmed limit, the SS501 can immediately activate a shutdown relay to protect the entire system.

3. Dewatering Pump Monitoring

Mining sites rely heavily on diesel-driven dewatering pumps.

A broken coupling, damaged impeller or shaft failure may allow the engine to continue running while the pump stops turning.

Monitoring pump shaft speed allows these failures to be detected immediately, preventing equipment damage and unnecessary downtime.

4. Crusher Protection

Crushers experience sudden load changes.

A blocked crusher or mechanical fault often causes shaft speed to fall below normal operating speed.

The SS501 can be programmed to:

  • Trigger a warning alarm
  • Shut down the system
  • Activate external safety controls

before major mechanical damage occurs.

5. Diesel Engine Overspeed Protection

Engine overspeed can result from governor failures or fuel system faults.

The SS501 can monitor engine RPM and activate an alarm or shutdown relay when preset speed limits are exceeded, helping protect expensive diesel engines used in generators, pumps and hydraulic power units.

Why Dual Channels Matter

Unlike many standard speed switches, the BOLEC SS501 features two completely independent input channels and two relay outputs.

This allows a variety of configurations, including:

  • Two independent machines
  • Two speed inputs with one combined output
  • One speed input controlling two different outputs
  • Independent alarm and shutdown functions

This flexibility makes the SS501 suitable for both mobile equipment and fixed industrial installations.

Flexible Sensor Compatibility

The SS501 accepts signals from:

  • Magnetic Pickup Sensors
  • Inductive/Magnetic Sensors
  • Hall Effect Sensors

making it compatible with many existing mining and industrial installations without requiring specialised sensors.

Key Features

  • Dual independent speed monitoring channels
  • Adjustable high and low speed set points
  • Overspeed protection
  • Underspeed protection
  • Zero speed monitoring
  • Independent relay outputs
  • Hall Effect and Magnetic Pickup compatibility
  • Wide operating range from 2 Hz to 9,990 Hz
  • 12V or 24V DC operation
  • Volt-free 5A relay outputs
  • IP54 enclosure for industrial environments

Designed for More Than Engine RPM

Although originally developed for engine RPM monitoring, the BOLEC SS501 is equally suited to monitoring virtually any rotating equipment.

Typical applications include:

  • Mining conveyors
  • Crushing plants
  • Screening equipment
  • Dewatering pumps
  • Hydraulic power packs
  • Bucket elevators
  • Industrial fans
  • Augers
  • Rotary feeders
  • Mobile plant

If your application requires reliable speed monitoring and automatic protection, the BOLEC SS501 offers a flexible and cost-effective solution.
