BEM502IRN technical overview
Engine protection, pump monitoring and timed irrigation
The BEM502IRN irrigation engine protection panel monitors critical engine and pump conditions, identifies faults and controls automatic shutdown through a correctly configured engine shutdown circuit.
- 12 VDC standard
- 6 sensor inputs
- 6 shutdown records
- Countdown control
Designed for irrigation pumps and stationary diesel engines, with engine instruments, audible warning and first-fault recall in one panel.
Product overview
Designed for irrigation pumps and stationary diesel engines
The panel combines engine monitoring, pump-pressure protection, fault indication,
timed operation and shutdown control in a weather-resistant enclosure.
Automatic shutdown
Initiates shutdown when a configured critical engine or pump fault is detected.
Six-fault memory
Retains the initiating fault from up to six shutdowns to help identify why the engine stopped.
Programmable run time
Countdown control sets a planned pump run period. Confirm the timer fitted to the supplied panel.
Monitored conditions
Engine and pump protection functions
Protection functions depend on the installed sensors, wiring and configuration. Confirm which external sensors and harness are included with your panel.
Low oil pressure
Monitors the oil-pressure protection switch after the built-in start-up delay.
High engine temperature
Monitors the high-temperature protection switch separately from the gauge connection.
Water or pump pressure
Monitors the configured pump-pressure switch arrangement. Confirm the required switch and input assignment.
Belt / spare input
Provides a separate belt/spare input. Confirm the sensor and configuration for your engine.
Loss of coolant
Supports coolant-level protection with a compatible probe and the water-level function enabled. Factory setting: disabled.
Alternator or belt failure
Uses the alternator/charge connection to detect a fault that may indicate alternator or drive-belt failure.
Key switch and charge lamp
Engine key-switch control and charging-system indication.
Tachometer and hour meter
Shows engine speed and accumulated operating hours. Confirm the instrument fitted to the supplied panel.
12-pin Deutsch plug
Consolidated removable connection for the engine and panel harness. Check the pinout before replacing an existing panel.
Start-up sequence and temporary bypass
- Turn the key on. The relay energises and closes its contacts for a suitable energise-to-run fuel-solenoid circuit.
- All LEDs flash during the built-in start-up delay. Sensor circuits are temporarily bypassed while the engine starts.
- When the delay ends, the LEDs stop flashing. If all enabled inputs are normal, the LEDs remain off.
- A detected fault gives an audible warning and first-fault indication, and initiates shutdown in the correctly wired system.
Coolant-level sensing and sensor-switch settings
Coolant-level sensing is disabled at the factory. In the manual’s jumper orientation, top + middle pins disable sensing; middle + bottom pins enable it. Keep it disabled on an air-cooled engine or a water-cooled engine without a probe.
Use a single-conductor probe such as WL601P. A two- or three-conductor resistive probe requires the DEM104WLAK interface. Plastic tanks also need a suitable ground reference.
For the configurable switch inputs: DIP OFF suits a switch closed to ground during normal running; DIP ON suits a switch open during normal running. DIP switches 1–4 correspond to Spare 1, Oil Pressure, Temperature and Spare 2. Follow the full manual for the installed panel.
Fault memory & recall
Fault Memory & Recall
This video specifically demonstrates fault indication, Fault Memory / Recall and memory reset. The monitor can retain the initiating fault from up to six previous shutdowns.
First fault, not every later fault. Once a shutdown cause is recorded, subsequent fault conditions in that event are not registered.
- Enter recall: hold RECALL while turning the key on. Release after the LEDs flash once.
- Read the first record: after the numbered flash sequence, the relevant fault LED remains on.
- View the next record: press RECALL again. Repeat for up to six stored shutdown records.
- Return to operation: turn the key off and back on.
For recall, release RECALL after the initial flash. The video also demonstrates a longer hold to clear memory; do not continue holding if you only want to read stored faults.
Video correction: the alternator-failure example lights the ALT indicator. Its caption says “OIL LED”; read that caption as “ALT LED”.

Countdown control
Programmable irrigation run timer
Set a planned pump operating period using the fitted countdown timer. The digital timer must be ON for the engine to start. Confirm the timer model supplied with your panel.
Timed pump operation
Set the required operating period so the irrigation engine and pump can run for a controlled duration.
Replacement comparison
Replacing an existing engine panel
Use these checks when considering the BEM502IRN as an alternative to an existing engine panel.
| Check | BEM502IRN | When replacing another panel |
|---|---|---|
| Supply voltage | Standard 12 VDC | Arrange an internally modified unit for 24 V |
| Shutdown circuit | Relay suitable for an energise-to-run solenoid | Confirm solenoid action, current and circuit protection |
| Sensor inputs | Switch inputs plus alternator and coolant connections | Check normal switch states, probe type and spare/pump assignments |
| Connection | 12-pin Deutsch connector | Check the exact pinout; appearance alone does not establish compatibility |
| Timer and instruments | Countdown timer and engine instruments | Confirm the actual supplied configuration |
| Mounting and price | Confirm against the current panel and quotation | Request overall dimensions and compare current complete-package prices |
Frequently asked questions
BEM502IRN FAQ
What is the BEM502IRN designed for?
Irrigation and diesel-pump installations requiring engine and pump monitoring, timed operation and automatic shutdown through a compatible control circuit.
Can I connect it directly to 24 V?
The standard panel is configured for 12 VDC. A 24 V installation requires internal modifications arranged through Bolec.
Does coolant-level monitoring work out of the box?
It is factory-disabled. Fit the correct probe, configure the jumper and wiring, and test the function before use.
What does six-fault memory mean?
The monitor stores the initiating fault from up to six shutdowns. It does not record every later fault within the same shutdown event.
Is it a direct replacement for a Murphy or other panel?
Confirm the supply, sensors, fuel-solenoid arrangement, harness pinout, timer and mounting before ordering.
Are external sensors and the harness included?
Confirm the contents of the quoted package. Listed monitoring functions do not establish which external sensors or harnesses are included.
Documents and help
Technical documents and application support
Request the current panel specification, wiring and commissioning instructions, or check your engine and pump configuration with Bolec.
The current controlled Bolec documentation and the markings on the supplied panel take precedence if any difference is found.
