Surface-Temperature Engine Shutdown Using BEM + DCS974T
A practical way to shut down an engine based on surface temperature using
BEM302 / BEM502 / BEM502IRN panels combined with the DCS974T temperature switch.
Always confirm your engine shutdown type (ETR / ETS) and test carefully before commissioning.
Why Use Surface Temperature?
Coolant temperature does not always detect localized overheating quickly.
A surface-mounted sensor can respond faster to:
- Coolant loss
- Blocked flow
- Overloading conditions
- Localized hot spots

Fuel Solenoid / Engine Shutdown
The DCS974T converts temperature into a clean relay signal.
The BEM panel monitors that signal and activates shutdown when required.
Typical Wiring Concept
1. Power the DCS974T
- Red → Ignition + (switched supply)
- Black → Ground (0V)
2. Relay Connection to BEM
- Relay COM → Ground
- Relay NO → BEM Temperature Switch Input
In normal conditions, the relay is open.
When over-temperature occurs, the relay closes to ground,
and the BEM panel triggers shutdown.
3. Set BEM Input Mode
Ensure the BEM DIP setting matches a
Normally Open switch to ground configuration.
Why This Combination Works Well
- Simple switch-based integration
- Fail-safe style logic (probe failure can trigger alarm)
- Clean interface to industrial engine panels
- Suitable for irrigation pumps & industrial engines
Installation Tips
- Choose sensor location carefully (head, block, manifold zone).
- Avoid high-noise wiring paths.
- Secure the probe firmly for stable temperature reading.
- Verify startup delay settings on the BEM panel.
Pre-Commissioning Checklist
- Confirm DCS temperature set point.
- Confirm BEM input configuration (NO/NC).
- Confirm correct shutdown method (ETR or ETS).
- Simulate alarm and verify full shutdown sequence.
- Document final wiring.
